Gi vs No-Gi BJJ: what's the difference?

How training with and without the kimono changes the game, and which one suits your goals.

Same art, different clothing — and the clothing changes more than you'd expect. Most gyms teach one, some teach both, and plenty of people train both deliberately.

Gi training

In the gi you wear a heavy cotton jacket, trousers and a belt. Because you can grip the fabric, control is stronger and exchanges are slower. That makes it excellent for learning: you have time to think, and mistakes are punished more slowly.

Gi also opens up collar chokes and a whole family of grips that simply don't exist without it.

No-gi training

No-gi is trained in shorts and a rash guard. Grips are on the body — wrists, necks, underhooks — so everything is faster and more slippery. Escapes are easier, which means control has to be tighter.

No-gi transfers directly into MMA, because nobody is wearing a jacket in a fight.

Which should you train?

  • Interested in MMA: no-gi is the priority
  • Want the deepest technical understanding: gi rewards patience
  • Prefer fast, athletic rounds: no-gi
  • Want to compete in BJJ: check which rule set your target events use

At One Mission

Most of our grappling programme is no-gi, running across the week for adults, juniors, teens and ladies, with a men's gi session on Saturday mornings. Beginners are welcome in both.
