You don't need to spend anything before your first class. Most people already own everything required, and buying kit before you know which discipline you enjoy is a good way to waste money.
The basics
For a first session, this list is enough:
- Shorts or leggings without pockets, zips or buttons
- A fitted t-shirt or rash guard
- A water bottle
- A small towel
- Clean indoor trainers if the class is striking or fitness based
Why no zips or pockets
In grappling, fingers and toes catch in pockets and zips scratch. It's a small detail that prevents most of the minor injuries beginners pick up.
What not to bring
Leave jewellery, watches and piercings at home or in your bag. Trim your nails — it's the single most appreciated courtesy in any grappling room. Don't buy gloves, shin pads or a gum shield until you've trained a few times and know what you need.
Hygiene
Train in clean kit, wash it after every session, and don't train with an open cut or a skin infection. Mats are cleaned, but shared training only works if everyone plays their part.
Still unsure?
Message us with the class you're attending and we'll tell you exactly what's needed for that session — nothing more.
