Wrestling Classes in Reading

Takedowns, balance and control — the skill that decides where a fight actually happens.

Freestyle Wrestling training at One Mission MMA in Earley, Reading

The discipline

What freestyle wrestling training involves

Wrestling is the most under-rated skill in mixed martial arts. It determines whether an exchange stays standing or goes to the mat, and being the person who decides that is an enormous advantage.

Our Wednesday freestyle wrestling session covers stance, motion, level changes and finishing takedowns, along with the defensive side: sprawling, framing and getting back to your feet. It's demanding, and it's taught in a way that beginners can follow.

What you'll learn

  • Stance, motion and level changes
  • Single and double leg entries and finishes
  • Hand fighting and ties from the clinch
  • Sprawling and takedown defence
  • Scrambling and re-attacking after a failed shot
  • Top control and how to keep it
  • How wrestling links into striking and submissions

Questions

Freestyle Wrestling questions

  • No. The Wednesday 18:00 freestyle wrestling session is built from the ground up: stance, motion, level changes, then entries and finishes. If you've never shot a takedown, you'll be taught the movement in isolation before anyone asks you to do it against resistance. Wrestling looks intimidating from the outside because it's athletic, but the fundamentals are extremely learnable and most beginners can execute a recognisable single leg within a few weeks of consistent attendance.
