What parents should look for in a martial arts gym

A practical checklist for choosing a club for your child, including the questions worth asking.

Most parents choose a club based on convenience, which is understandable. A few extra questions at the start make a considerable difference to whether your child is still training a year later.

Safeguarding and staffing

Ask directly whether coaches working with children are DBS checked and whether the club has a safeguarding policy. A club that handles this properly will answer immediately and without defensiveness.

How classes are grouped

Age-banded classes matter. A seven-year-old in a class with thirteen-year-olds will not get an appropriate session. Look for defined groups — under-8s, 8–12, 13–17 — with content pitched at each.

Watch a session before deciding

  • Are children engaged, or standing around waiting?
  • Does the coach know every child's name?
  • Is partner work supervised and sensibly paired?
  • Are quieter children included, or left at the edges?
  • Can parents stay and watch, or are they asked to leave?

Commercial pressure

Be wary of long fixed contracts, compulsory grading fees stacked several times a year, and pressure to buy expensive kit before your child has decided they like it. Monthly rolling membership and a genuinely free trial are good signs.

The simplest test

Book a free trial and watch. Your child will tell you within one session whether they want to come back, and you'll learn more from twenty minutes at the side of the mat than from any website — including this one.
